How To Naturally Boost Your Immune System 44/365

Nobody likes to be sick.

Do you find like you are always picking up a cold, or whatever is going around?

Then take these top tips into consideration to help you boost your immune system and avoid the dreaded flu season.

Adequate Energy Intake

When you are in a large calorie deficit, your immune system is deprived. So go with a small deficit for a start to ensure you still have enough calories for day to day activities. If you eat in a small calorie deficit, then ensure your protein intake is up and try to avoid any nutrient deficiencies, to help maintain your immunity.

Avoid Nutrient Deficiencies

So to avoid any nutrient deficiencies, you need to make sure you are eating a wide variety of food, especially nutrient dense foods like fruit, vegetables and animal products. Also ensure you are eating enough dietary/healthy fat. Being low in nutrients will suppress your immune system.

Don’t Restrict Carbs

To maintain a healthy immune system, make sure you eat adequate carbohydrates to suit your daily energy needs. Eating carbs after exercise can help reduce stress hormones such as cortisol in the body and may reduce any exercise - induced immune depression.

Keep Hydrated

So the first line of defence is in your mouth - your saliva. So to keep saliva production, you need to keep hydrated. Keep drinking water, add a sprinkle of sea salt, or have a good hydrating drink like milk or fruit juice.

Maintain Good Hygiene

You can help keep bugs at bay by having a good hygiene regime. Wash hands before eating, and wash thoroughly after exercising to avoid picking up any bugs at the gym. Use hand sanitisers, clean water bottles and wash towels and flannels often.

The Power of Sleep

Did you know that you are 3 times less likely to contract a cold if you are maintaining your sleep to about 8 hours a night. Do you get enough sleep? If not how can you boost this?
