Cannabis for a healthy body 43/365
Cannabidiol or CBD as you hear it, is now a popular health supplement. It is found in the cannabis or marijuana plant. As these are classified drugs, CBD is not as it has been extracted and doesnt contain any THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid that causes the ‘high’. CBD that has been extracted from the cannabis plant is normally diluted in hemp oil or coconut oil and sold as a small bottle that you can drop into the mouth. The other day, I took a coffee infused with CBD from the leaves. It was a very interesting taste. The coffee actually tasted like a bulletproof coffee, i.e tasted like heavy cream in my coffee, or maybe it was all in my head. However I love the taste.
So as CBD is safe to use, who should use it and why?
Its becoming a mainstream health supplement. Historically, it was suggested to chronic pain sufferers as an alternative pain relief. But after some scientific studies, we can confirm that there are some benefits.
Pain Relief - CBD, especially in combination with THC, may be effective in reducing pain associated with diseases like multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Reduce Anxiety and Depression - this is a natural approach that has proven very beneficial to people suffering from anxiety.
Reduce Side Effects to Cancer Treatment - it helps alleviate pain, reduces nausea and vomiting. More studies have to be done to see if it can actually stop cancer cells spreading. It was successful in mice, but this does not mean it could work for humans.
Reduce Acne - Acting as an anti-inflammatory, CBD also helps to reduce sebum production.
Neuroprotective Properties - for those with neurological disorders, such as MSand epilepsy , the CBD has a beneficial response on the brain signalling systems, as with pain relief, it can reduce spasticity and seizures. It could also be used as a sleep aid.
Heart Health - as with the benefits of reducing anxiety, it cold also be treating high blood pressure, and preventing heart damage.
Sports Injuries - as a pain reducing anti inflammatory, it may be beneficial to people in sport to help them recover. I have been looking into the benefit of adding the drops to my massage oil. However it would be a more costly massage.
There are some possible side effects however. Certain people will experience
Changes in appetite
It may also interfere with medications, so a doctors advise should be sought. Research on CBD is still on going but it provides a great scope on a natural pain reliever.
