Its the middle of winter, its freezing outside and I just remembered that this would be a great opportunity to talk about frozen food.
Are you utilising the freezer to your best benefit? You can use it to store leftovers, prep fresh meals, keep a stock of fruits and vegetables.
Today lets talk about frozen vegetables and fruits. Are they really as good as the fresh varieties?
In some ways they are probably better.
Overall, the vitamin content of the frozen commodities was comparable to and occasionally higher than that of their fresh counterparts. β-Carotene, however, was found to decrease drastically in some commodities. So if the quality of frozen vegetables is so good - then lets take a look at the simplicity of having them in the freezer, which ones are the best and why you should have your freezer packed.
The best reason I can think of, for having frozen vegetables is the convenience. You dont have to clean, chop or prepare most of this veg. If you have bought in advance, you will have a good supply of fruit and vegetables that is not going to go off quickly and that you can always have on hand. So there’s no excuses for not getting a good source or nutrients onto your dinner plate or in a smoothie.
These are the best types of products to store in you freezer.
Berries, Cherries, or tropical fruits for adding to smoothies
Green Beans, garden peas
Farmhouse Veg Mix
Of course some of the fresh varieties will taste better but if you are going to mix these into soups or smoothies, then they work the best.
From personal experiences, they have saved me time in the evening when I get home late. I have even managed to find a farmhouse veg mix that my fussy eater boyfriend enjoys eating. For smoothies, they are just perfect. Since in Ireland we dont tend to get a great fruit variety, they can either be gone off quick or take forever to ripen - so I prefer to buy frozen and in bulk, so I can make tasty fruit and veggie smoothies to top up my vitamins!!
So you could be time saving, and money saving by storing more in your freezer. Fresh may be best in some cases, but from the list above, these work exceptionally good when frozen.
